NEW CIS/ED LICENSE TERMS; NEW PRINT VOLUME PRICING
Web and CDROM licenses for CIS/ED will be distinct
Up to now, access to the CIS Web Query Site has been treated as an adjunct to the CIS/ED (Extended Database) license for the CDROM product. This has been confusing to many of our subscribers: those who prefer to use Web access have received a CDROM for which they have no use. Furthermore, licensing of the CDROM is based on annual releases of that product, with perpetual use of the CDROM once delivered. These terms are not appropriate to the Web site, which is continually updated and accessed for a given period of time.
To simplify and clarify our licensing of these two products, we are henceforth licensing them separately. All new orders and renewals will indicate either that they are for the CDROM or for Web access. A license for Web access will cover a 12-month period beginning when access is first granted and will be renewable on the anniversary of that date every year. Web subscribers will be asked to specify the range of IP addresses that are eligible for access under the appropriate license category.
License categories and prices for Web access remain as before, except that there is no additional charge for the first year of access. The CDROM has a double charge for first-year licenses, to encourage continuity of upgrading. All products are ordered through the same order form.
Please note that Web access is available only to institutional subscribers; we are not yet able to accomodate Personal licenses through this system.
CIS/ED moves to shrink-wrap and click-through licensing
The CIS/ED licenses have been rewritten and simplified to deal with a number of problems with the old license language. One of the main changes is that it is no longer necessary to submit a signed license agreement with each order. This will simplify the ordering and fulfillment process. The CDROM will operate under a "shrinkwrap" license. Consent to license terms will be indicated by breaking the seal on the CDROM package.
Similarly, the Web version will operate under a "click-through" license. Consent will be indicated by clicking on a button on the web site on which requests for access are submitted.
Price increases for Print Volume
Prices for Print Volume orders will increased effective October 1, 2001. Orders at the old prices will be accepted through September 30. This is the first price increase for the Print Volume in at least 8 years. The new prices only partially reflect greatly increased costs of all aspects of production, including print, mailing and production staff. We think that CIS is still a bargain, both in absolute terms and relative to similar products for other fields!
New Print Volume prices:
- Members of ASA and IMS: $35
- Individual nonmembers: $70
- Institutional purchasers: $100
- Students (with proof of student status): $10
